To help insure the health and safety of its members, the Quaker Park Tennis Club (QPTC) in Peterborough this season installed the Philips HeartStart OnSite Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at their tennis club house. Members wanted the AED at QPTC to provide emergency first aid to club members who might experience a severe cardiac event while playing tennis. Club member, Joan Miller, implemented the AED device at the club in coordination with Niagara Falls company HESPRO throughout the Summer season.
Installation of the AED unit at QPTC was completed on July 21, 2009 and training on the skills of CPR and use of the AED unit was to proceed the following day, July 22, 2009. The AED unit can be operated with a minimal amount of training but having at least six to eight trained responders is ideal in the event of an emergency.

HESPRO recognized QPTC on September 3, 2009 for the club’s ability to enact the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Chain of Survival™ by recognizing the emergency, calling 9-1-1, initiating CPR immediately and having an AED unit to apply defibrillation in this emergency situation.
QPTC was pleased to have George Hall at the awards presentation and wants to encourage Tennis and recreation clubs across Ontario to install AEDs in case of similar cardiac emergencies on the court.
